Art & Design
Learning together; growing together
At the heart of the community
Rationale
Our visions and values are woven throughout our curriculum and art is no exception. We want to encourage the children to be curious about the world around us and learn to respond to our world through art. Resilience and perseverance are embedded within our art curriculum, allowing children to be creative and be the best that they can be. Art is something that should be enjoyed and valued by all of our children regardless of ability; be happy taking part in the process.
The Children should be encouraged to be confident to take an active part in Art and Design enabling them to foster their creativity and imagination.
Intent
At Burradon Community Primary School we intend that children should master Art and Design to such an extent that they can go on to have careers within Art and Design and make use of art effectively in their everyday lives. We want to nurture a love and appreciation of art with our children and support them in understanding the importance of art in our diverse and beautiful world.
Our children will be taught Art and Design in a way that ensures progression of skills, and follows a sequence to build on previous learning throughout our curriculum.
Our children will gain experience and skills of a wide range of formal elements of art in a way that will enhance their learning opportunities, enabling them to use art and design across a range of subjects to be creative and solve problems, ensuring they make progress.
Implementation
At Burradon Community Primary School we follow a broad and balanced Art and Design curriculum that builds on previous learning and provides both support and challenge for learners. We follow high quality Art and Design scheme that ensures progression of skills and covers all aspects of the Art and Design curriculum.
The teaching and implementation of the Art and design Curriculum at Burradon Community Primary School is based on the National Curriculum and supported by Kapow Primary Scheme of work, ensuring a well-structured approach to this creative subject. The scheme ensures progression and repetition in terms of embedding key learning, knowledge and skills.
Our scheme of work is designed with five strands that run throughout.
These are:
- Generating ideas
- Making skills
- Formal elements (line, shape, tone, texture, pattern, colour)
- Knowledge of artists
- Evaluating
These strands are revisited in every unit and key skills are revisited again and again with increasing complexity in a spiral curriculum model. This allows pupils to revise and build on their previous learning.
In years 1-6 we cover 4 units of art that include art and design skills, formal elements of art and design and 2 more units that are progressive where children can apply their skills in a more complex project. We teach Art and Design on alternate half terms with Design and Technology.
Within the Early Years Foundation Stage children are given the opportunity to be creative daily either in an adult directed task or child-led. The strands that are predominantly linked to Art and Design are Expressive Arts and Design and Physical Development.
Children’s work and pictures of their work will be shared on Seesaw, displayed in the school or kept in their sketchbooks.
We want to ensure that Art and Design is embedded in our whole school curriculum and that opportunities for enhancing learning by using art are always taken.
Impact
Our children enjoy and value Art and Design and know why they are doing things, not just how. Children will understand and appreciate the value of Art and Design in the context of their personal wellbeing and the creative and cultural industries and their many career opportunities.

How do you know when you have made progress in art?
We practise lots, doing the spirals and circles
We can see the difference in our work. We look at our work and make changes if they are needed.
It looks more realistics, more neat. By keep trying and looking at the piece before and make it better. Do it once then work on it again.
You would realise because your pieces will be better. Looking back to the start of your sketchbook but also if you keep trying and trying and see a difference.
Look back at what I did last time to see if it is better. I used to draw stick people but now I draw real people. I have more detail. Now I can shape a face properly and not just a circle.
Started to get better with my drawing. I can draw from memory not just copying off a picture.
Why do we have art lessons?
So you can learn how to be really good and be an artist
So we can get more practice at home and school. If we want to be an art teacher or artist.
To help children in the class who want to be an artist and help them practise. It is fun!
So we can learn about different artists, learn how to draw and get better. Alo in case we want to be an artist when we grow up.
It is fun. We can learn how to draw. We can get better at our artistic abilities. In case you want to be an artist you need to learn different things.
So you can see others’ creativity and help learn skills.
What do you learn in art?
Spirals, animal craft, snail sculptures, number rainbow painting, wander animal drawings.
About different artists and their designs. We draw stuff.

Use different materials like tissue paper, water colours, pastels. We learn to patterns.
Photography, surrealism, artists (Picasso)
How are art lessons different / the same as other lessons?
We do lots of drawing
In History we look at the past but in art we make new things. We are still learning.
Different: Use paint, have your own style sometimes, not really using maths, not really writing unless writing features or research.
Same: Same tools like pencils and pens, learning about artists or facts.
Different: we are using different materials to do more creative things. You are not working your brain, you are relaxing.
Same: Sometimes in other lessons we draw things too like English and designing a character.
Different: It is more fun. We draw and colour in. We learn how to use different textures.
Same: Sometimes we do writing in our sketch books. We use a book. We are still learning.
Different: fun but still a lesson, more creativity and personal style, show different abilities
Same: still learning facts and information, still learning new skills, improving on previous work.

We can go back and correct what we think.
If you did something bad, it might feel better as no one is writing about it.
Happy, because it means that we can be creative and we can feel more confident.
Weird because you write in all of our other books. Not really bothered. The red pen wouldn’t fit with the theme that we are doing. It doesn’t look nice if there is red pen on it. Good, so you don’t tell us to restart.
Good because it’s personal and there aren’t any right or wrong answers.
