Key Stage 1 Curriculum

There are nine subjects that must be taught at Key Stage 1.

These are identified as 'Core Subjects' or 'Foundation Subjects'.

 The 'Core Subjects' are:

The 'Foundation Subjects' are:

• History
• Geography
• Art and Design
• Physical Education
• Music
• RE
• PSHCE
• Design and Technology

Maths

At Key Stage 1 we follow the  National Curriculum 2014 for Mathematics and follow the mastery approach using White Rose planning.  All children in Key Stage 1 have daily Mathematics sessions and we consider it to be one of our priorities that children leave school with secure basic skills which will serve them well in the future.  To support this we also have dedicated daily mental maths sessions to develop and enhance these key skills. Maths websites to support learning at home are on this website an we encourage the use of Times Tables Rockstars and Hit the Button to reinforce mental maths skills.  Children are given homework once a week to reinforce work completed in class.

Reading

At Key Stage 1 we follow the  National Curriculum 2014.  All children in Key Stage 1 have daily English sessions and we consider it to be one of our priorities that children leave school with secure basic skills which will serve them well in the future.  Children also have phonics lesson. Essential Letters and Sounds phonic scheme has been introduced in January 2022 into Key Stage 1 ensure a systematic approach to phonics.    

Children follow the Oxford Reading Tree Reading Scheme. All children in year Key Stage 1 have an individual and guided reading sessions each week. Whole class reading linked to English lessons and other curriculum areas. Children receive 2 books a week which must be read at home and this forms part of the weekly homework.  Incentives such as house points and stickers are given to promote reading.    

Creative Curriculum

Lessons are delivered through our creative curriculum which changes regularly and is planned to provide progression and challenge.  All pupil receive at least two hours of high quality Physical Education each week.  We use the Outdoor Area and the Woodland Area to support learning.  We also use visitors and trips outside of school to bring learning alive.
